2027 UCR Registration Is Open: Fees Rise About 20%

Published: October 15, 2026 | Reading time: 3 minutes

Registration for 2027 Unified Carrier Registration (UCR), the yearly fee interstate carriers pay, opened October 1, 2026. Pay by December 31. A few roadside officers give some slack in early January, but plan on being cited starting January 1 if you haven't paid.

What's Different This Year

UCR fees stayed flat for 2025 and 2026. For 2027 they rise about 20% on average. FMCSA made the increase final on September 1, 2026, after the UCR Board said the program had collected less than it planned.

The new fees stay in place for 2028 and beyond until FMCSA changes them again.

2027 Fees by Fleet Size

You pay one fee per company, based on how many trucks you own or operate.

Fleet size 2026 fee 2027 fee You pay more
0-2 trucks $46 $55 +$9
3-5 trucks $138 $167 +$29
6-20 trucks $276 $333 +$57
21-100 trucks $963 $1,163 +$200
101-1,000 trucks $4,592 $5,548 +$956
1,001+ trucks $44,836 $54,165 +$9,329

Brokers and leasing companies that don't run their own trucks pay the $55 fee.

A one-truck owner-operator pays nine dollars more. Run 10 trucks and your bill climbs $57.

Who Has to Register

You need UCR if you haul in interstate commerce. Your trucks don't have to leave Minnesota for that to count. A truck hauling air freight, or delivering goods shipped in from another state, is in interstate commerce too.

UCR covers:

  • For-hire motor carriers
  • Private carriers hauling their own goods
  • Brokers
  • Freight forwarders
  • Leasing companies

Filing UCR in Minnesota

Minnesota carriers pay the same national fees as everyone else. MnDOT lists the 2027 fee brackets on its UCR page and starts enforcement on January 1, 2027. You file through the national system at ucr.gov, or we file it for you.

Check Your Truck Count First

UCR lets you count trucks one of two ways. You can use the number on your USDOT record, from your most recent MCS-150 (the form that keeps that record current). Or you can count the trucks you owned or leased for more than 30 days in the 12 months ending June 30, 2026. Most carriers use the USDOT record count, since UCR.gov fills it in for you.

If your USDOT record is out of date, update your MCS-150 before you file UCR. Leave extra time for it, since carrier updates in FMCSA's new MOTUS system have been slow this year. We can handle both for you.

Let Us File Your 2027 UCR

We file UCR for Minnesota and Wisconsin carriers every fall. When you call, we'll:

  • Check your truck count against your USDOT record
  • Fix the MCS-150 first if it needs it
  • File your 2027 UCR and send you the receipt

Waiting until late December leaves no time to fix a wrong truck count or an out-of-date MCS-150. File your 2027 UCR with Consultran or call us at 651-482-1124.
